Notes from the Platform Team

By Macarena Valenzuela, Customer Success Lead, Avvoka
Ask a team what slowed down their last high-volume deal and the answer is rarely the drafting. One client team told us it was the checkboxes. Before they set them up in Massdraft, two of them spent around two hours adding checkboxes by hand in Docusign, across 40 rows of data, for a single document.
As runs go, 40 rows is small. The share schemes, fund closings and supplier repapering projects I see in customer success can run to hundreds of parties and thousands of documents. At scale that’s where bulk document generation stops being a nice-to-have and starts deciding who goes home on time.
Where the hours go
On a high-volume matter, the legal thinking is front-loaded. Someone senior settles the form of agreement, the variables and the edge cases. After that the work is mechanical, and it grows with every document. Each one has to be populated, checked, packed, sent and chased.
Mail merge and a careful associate can carry 40 documents. At 400, the checking becomes the job, and the signing stage turns into a spreadsheet of who has signed what. That’s where the errors and the late nights come from.
Treat the deal as one set of data
The teams that run these matters well work from one dataset: a template the lawyers trust, a sheet of deal data, and rules for who gets what. Get those three right and every document, signature pack and status update follows from them.
Massdraft is built on that idea. Your lawyers’ judgement goes into the template and the data, once. The software handles the repetition.
How bulk document generation works in Massdraft

Templates from your own documents. Upload your existing precedents and SmartAutomation picks up the fields that change and the Docuaign tags. Your team reviews and edits what SmartAutomation sets up before anything is generated.
Data from your spreadsheet. Bring in deal data from Excel and AI maps the columns to your templates. As the deal moves, update the data and generate again.
Rules for who gets what. Set conditions so each party receives only the documents that apply to them, for example by jurisdiction. Every pack is personalised.
Review before anything goes out. Every document comes from the same data, and you can read each one on screen and compare versions.
Signature, grouped for you. Massdraft builds the Docusign envelopes, grouping documents per signatory or splitting them to sign in counterparts.
One view of who has signed. A dashboard tracks every envelope, and you can share it externally, so the client sees the same status you do.
What that looks like on a live matter
One global law firm used Massdraft to produce 1,500 supplier agreements in two and a half hours. At 15 to 20 minutes a document, doing them by hand would have taken more than 500 hours.
Another firm sent out 262 signature pages through Massdraft on a single matter. And the signing stage is where clients tend to notice the change most. As one put it: “I don’t see us going back, seeing how well Massdraft and the Docusign dashboard work.”
Scale with the data, not the headcount
On a 1,500-document deal, the legal judgement goes into the the template, the data and the rules. Everything after that should grow with the data, not with the number of people you can put on it at ten at night.
If your next matter runs to hundreds of documents, start with the template you already trust and the spreadsheet you already have.
